When False Perceptions Lead to Real Charges: How a Young Man Escaped a Life-Changing Accusation
Every story has two sides. Sometimes, what seems like a serious crime, is a misunderstanding.
That’s exactly what happened to one of our recent clients, a young man accused of something he never planned to do.
The Accusation: A Murder-for-Hire Case
Our client was in a serious relationship with a young woman who kept a big secret: she had a child she never told him about. She kept the secret for almost a year.
When our client found out, he felt betrayed. Hurt and confused, he made a comment out of frustration: “I’d think about getting back with you if the kid wasn’t around.”
Later, his ex told him she had gone online to find someone to kill her child and even claimed she had left the child in the woods. Shocked, our client replied: “Send me a picture. I don’t believe you.”
That message, just one line, was all it took for the police to arrest him for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and unlawful use of a communication device.
What We Did: Telling the Truth Behind the Words
As soon as our client got out of jail, he came to us. In our first meeting, we took time to really listen to his side of the story.
We understood this wasn’t a real plan to hurt anyone; it was a bad breakup, a shocking claim by the ex-girlfriend, and a message taken the wrong way.
We contacted the prosecutor right away and kept pushing to make sure they understood the full picture. We didn’t just wait, we took action to show who our client really was.
The Result: Charges Dropped Before Court
After a few weeks of fighting for him, the prosecutor agreed. She saw that he hadn’t done anything criminal, and the case was closed before it ever went to court.
No trial. No conviction. No charges filed.
“Just because you’re innocent doesn’t mean you don’t need a criminal defense attorney,” says Attorney Daniel Izquierdo. “We fight to make sure your story is heard and your future is protected.”
