The first part of any DUI case is typically the stop. You don't necessarily have to be stopped by a police officer because they have a reasonable suspicion that you are DUI. You can be stopped by an officer for any reason, whether it be running a stop sign, speeding, failure to maintain a lane, or making an illegal turn, and then the observations of a DUI can form once the officer is having face-to-face contact with you. They could also initiate a stop based on observations that may lead them to believe that you are driving under the influence. It could be late at night and you're driving erratically, you're failing to maintain a lane, you're accelerating rapidly and decreasing your speed. But most stops will happen for something that is not necessarily DUI-specific or related to DUI, just having to do with a traffic infraction.
